Parking and access explained

Floor-Level vs Bay-Level Parking Guidance: What Does Each Show?

Floor-level guidance tells drivers about a larger parking area. Bay-level guidance identifies the status of individual spaces. A sign showing spaces available on Level 2 does not, by itself, tell a driver which specific bay to use.

What floor-level information tells a driver

A floor or zone total helps answer a broad question: should I continue to this level or choose another area? It can be useful before a ramp or junction, where the next decision concerns a destination rather than a particular space.

For example, a hypothetical “Level 2: 18” display describes an area total. It does not identify the positions of those spaces or show whether the nearest aisle contains one. A driver may still need to look within the chosen area.

The coverage matters as much as the number. A floor label, zone name and arrow must refer to a recognisable area. Otherwise, the driver cannot connect a correct total with a useful choice.

What bay-level information adds

Individual-space information narrows the answer to a particular bay. Depending on the system, a nearby indicator or another display can communicate that bay’s recorded status. It helps with the final search within an aisle, rather than only the earlier choice of floor.

The status must come from suitable detection and interpretation. A coloured light alone is an output, not proof of how the space was detected or which rules determine whether a driver can use it. In particular, an empty reserved bay and an empty public bay may have different availability for the same driver.

Display detail and detection detail are separate

A floor total can be derived from individual bay states or from another counting arrangement. Seeing a floor display therefore does not establish whether every space has a detector. Likewise, one camera may observe more than one bay in a suitable system, so bay-level information does not always mean one device per space.

Two separate questions make the comparison clearer: what detail does the system know, and what detail does it show to the driver? A system can hold individual-space information while presenting only a summary at the entrance. The sign’s appearance does not reveal the full underlying data.

Our occupancy versus availability guide explains the separate question of which spaces belong in an available count. That definition matters at both floor and bay level.

Which information helps your users?

Drivers choosing between several levels need a useful destination summary. Drivers already in a long aisle need help locating a suitable space. These are different decisions, and a system can provide information for both.

More detail is not an automatic promise of greater accuracy, faster searching or lower operating cost. Those outcomes depend on the actual detection, coverage and display arrangement. The label bay-level describes the information’s granularity; it is not a performance rating.

If you are comparing suppliers, describe whether the problem is choosing an area, finding a specific bay, or both. The parking guidance product overview explains the relevant equipment families without assuming a fixed model for every site.

Common questions

Does a floor total mean every bay is monitored?

No. A displayed total does not establish its detection method.

Does a bay indicator identify the parked vehicle?

Not necessarily. Reporting occupancy and recognising a vehicle are different functions.

Can both levels of guidance be used together?

Yes, as an information concept: summaries guide the area choice and bay-level information helps with the final space. Actual supported equipment and connections depend on the offered system.
